The Grove Hotel

About
The Grove sits just beyond the northern edge of London, where the city loosens its grip and the Hertfordshire countryside takes over. The estate spreads across three hundred acres of parkland once owned by the Earls of Clarendon, a political dynasty whose most famous member, the nineteenth century Foreign Secretary George Villiers, entertained diplomats here long before the word luxury resort entered the vocabulary. The house itself carries the composed confidence of an English country seat. Built in red brick with balanced Georgian proportions, it faces broad lawns that roll toward mature woodland and a lake. Inside, the historic shell meets quietly modern interiors designed by Martin Hulbert, where fireplaces, deep sofas and generous windows keep the mood relaxed rather than ceremonious. Since opening as a hotel in 2003, The Grove has cultivated the rare ability to feel both grand and informal. Golfers head for the championship course designed by Kyle Phillips, host of the 2006 World Golf Championship. Others drift between the spa, the gardens and long lunches that easily slide into afternoon walks. What makes the place memorable is the sense of space and continuity. One arrives from London in under an hour yet quickly forgets the city exists. The Grove feels like a country estate that simply decided, quite generously, to share itself.
