Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
Rue de la Régence 3, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium — Bruxelles — Belgium
About
Set just steps from Place Royale on Brussels’ cultural hill, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium unfold partly above and partly beneath the city. The complex blends a sober neoclassical façade from the late nineteenth century with a surprising sequence of modern underground galleries opened in the 1980s. Inside, light shifts from grand marble staircases and vaulted halls to darker, theatrical spaces that heighten the drama of the collection. Visitors move from the Flemish Primitives, including major works by Bruegel, to the dreamlike universe of Magritte in a museum entirely devoted to the Belgian surrealist. The layout encourages a slow, curious rhythm, punctuated by city views and quiet corners that feel almost private. It is a place where Brussels reveals both its historical depth and its quietly playful spirit.
