Hôtel Château de La Chèvre d’Or
The Village That Became a Hotel
- A medieval village transformed into a luxury hotel.
- A spectacular clifftop setting.
- Two Michelin starred dining led by chef Tom Meyer.
- 45 rooms
- Èze Village (medieval hilltop village)
You don’t so much arrive at La Chèvre d’Or as wander into it. A discreet stone passage in Èze leads to what appears to be another village lane. And, in a way, it is. The hotel occupies 45 rooms and suites scattered among medieval houses, connected by narrow passages, ancient staircases and terraces perched some 400 metres above the Mediterranean. It began in 1953, when hotelier Robert Wolf opened a restaurant in a small château. Walt Disney reportedly stayed long enough to suggest buying the neighbouring houses and turning them into guestrooms. Wolf took his advice, and the hotel has been growing into the village ever since. One imagines Disney would have appreciated the result.
The Golden Goat has an older story. Croatian violinist Zlatko Baloković, who restored the property between the wars, gave it its unusual name. Local legends involve golden goats, hidden money and stone walls. The village agrees on the goat. The details remain negotiable. The rooms are wonderfully inconsistent. Some favour gilded mirrors and extravagant bathrooms; others offer pale contemporary interiors and private infinity pools. Nietzsche has a suite named after him, complete with a private pool. The philosopher himself had to settle for the steep coastal path below.
At the highest point, the two Michelin starred restaurant serves ambitious French cuisine against a panorama stretching towards Monaco. Les Remparts and Café du Jardin provide more relaxed alternatives, with terraces that could easily distract from lunch. With three Michelin Keys, La Chèvre d’Or is among France’s most distinguished hotels. Yet its greatest pleasure is wandering through an ancient village and finding that an ordinary looking stone doorway opens onto an extraordinary view.

chevredor.com - Check-in & check-out
- Check-in from 15:00, check-out by 11:00
- Parking
- Valet parking at the entrance to pedestrian-only Èze Village; approximately €40 per day (verify when booking).
- Getting around
- Èze Village is served by regional buses from Nice and Monaco; Èze-sur-Mer railway station is down by the coast, not in the hilltop village. Check connections and arrange a taxi if travelling with luggage.
- Arriving
- The hotel is inside pedestrian-only medieval Èze. Drivers should report to the white barrier at the foot of the village for valet parking and luggage assistance; reach the rooms on foot via uneven lanes and steps.
- Pets
- Small and medium-sized pets accepted in guestrooms; €25 per pet per day, subject to confirmation.
- Accessibility
- The hotel explicitly advises that its medieval village setting makes access difficult for guests with reduced mobility. Pedestrian access only, no lift or accessible route, and many rooms occupy multiple levels with internal stairs.
- Travelling with children
- Children of all ages are welcome. Cots and extra beds depend on room category and availability; some extra beds incur a charge. Many steps and steep drop-offs warrant particular care with young children.
Worth knowing
- The property is seasonal; its 2026 opening period is advertised as April 9 to October 24, so confirm your dates directly.
- Èze is pedestrian-only with steep stone lanes and numerous stairs; unsuitable for guests needing step-free access.
- Reserve the two-Michelin-starred restaurant well in advance; dining venues have seasonal schedules and some terraces depend on weather.
- The communal outdoor pool is relatively compact. Some premium suites have private pools.
- Confirm sea views by room category; not all rooms have them.
