Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, A Belmond Train, Europe

On the Venice Simplon Orient Express, you do not really stay in a room. You sleep inside a piece of railway history that happens to be crossing Europe. The carriages are originals from the 1920s and 1930s, restored with polished walnut, brass handles, marquetry and those soft little lamps that make even a corridor look ready for a discreet scandal. Nothing here feels accidental, although the spaces remind you quickly that this is still a train. Classic cabins are compact, beautifully so, while the larger suites add the kind of comfort that makes a bathtub beside a moving landscape seem perfectly reasonable.

The joy is in the details. A steward in blue appears with breakfast while fields blur past the window. At dinner, chef Jean Imbert turns the historic restaurant cars into a travelling stage set, with proper linen, seasonal dishes and just enough ceremony to make you sit up straighter. Côte d’Azur, built in 1929, still has René Lalique glass panels. Bar Car 3674 waits later with piano music, cocktails and the happy risk of losing all interest in bedtime.

The mythology is earned. In 1929, an Orient Express service was trapped by snow near Istanbul for several days, feeding the legend that later surrounded Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The Belmond train was revived in 1982 by James Sherwood, who rescued vintage carriages when most people were busy inventing faster ways to travel. This one chose charm instead. Bring evening wear, a small bag and the patience to enjoy going slowly.
