About

From the street, Sublime Lisboa hardly announces itself. The elegant 1913 townhouse looks much as it always has, tucked into one of Lisbon’s most pleasant residential neighbourhoods. Ring the bell and it becomes clear why the hotel has only fifteen rooms. This was never meant to be a grand hotel. The house has lived several lives. It began as the residence of a doctor, later became Lisbon’s Japanese Club during Portugal’s years of wartime neutrality, and eventually housed the well known restaurant O Candelabro, where artists and the city’s social crowd lingered long into the evening. Today, its latest chapter feels surprisingly natural. You notice the scale immediately. Breakfast is quiet, there is rarely anyone waiting at reception, and by the second morning the staff know your coffee order. That intimacy is the hotel’s greatest luxury. Inside, the original staircase and plaster mouldings remain, while bold geometric wallpapers, warm walnut, woven cane, marble and contemporary Portuguese design bring the rooms into the present. No two are alike. Some are compact because the original floor plan has been respected, others are generous enough for a freestanding bath and an afternoon with a good book. Even if you are not staying here, Davvero is worth knowing. Chef Isaac Kumi, who spent years with the Cipriani group, serves refined Italian cooking in a dining room that feels like an elegant neighbourhood restaurant rather than a hotel restaurant. Start with a cocktail at the bar and you’ll quickly understand why plenty of locals walk through the same front door.
