Departing from Cape Town’s historic station, Rovos Rail turns rail travel into an exercise in unapologetic grandeur. Founded in 1989 by Rohan Vos, the restored Edwardian era carriages gleam with polished wood, brass fittings and leather banquettes that seem designed for long conversations and a second glass of South African red. As Table Mountain slips from view, the train rolls north through vineyards and into the vast Karoo, where horizons stretch with cinematic indifference.
