About

The project comes from Gonçalo Pessoa, the entrepreneur behind São Lourenço do Barrocal, one of Portugal’s most admired hospitality success stories. For Na Praia, he spent more than a decade developing a property on a protected stretch of coastline north of Comporta. The result occupies 340 hectares of dunes, pine forests and coastal scrubland, with direct access to two kilometres of beach. What strikes you first is not the architecture, but the absence of it. The buildings sit low in the landscape, almost concealed among the vegetation. Instead of creating a visual landmark, the architects focused on preserving the feeling that nature was here first. Inside, the design has far more personality than the usual barefoot luxury formula. Bathrooms are wrapped in earthy pink ceramic tiles. Floors and ceilings are lined with warm timber. Heavy wooden furniture, textured plaster walls and soft natural fabrics create spaces that feel calm without becoming sterile. There is a confidence to the restraint. The same philosophy continues at the table. The food draws heavily on Portuguese ingredients and Atlantic seafood. Grilled octopus, vegetables from local producers and uncomplicated cooking suit the setting far better than elaborate tasting menus would. Those who enjoy long walks through dunes, mornings spent watching the light change across the landscape and afternoons that unfold without a plan will likely understand exactly what Na Praia is trying to achieve. Here, the landscape is the main attraction.
