In Kyoto’s eastern hills, a short walk from Kiyomizu-dera, Maana Kiyomizu reinterprets the traditional machiya with a level of restraint that feels almost radical. The townhouse dates back over a century, yet its current form strips the typology to its essence: pale plaster walls, exposed timber beams, and a near-ceremonial use of light. Rooms are deliberately sparse, organised around a central courtyard where stone, moss and filtered daylight set the rhythm of the stay.

There is no restaurant, no bar, no attempt to entertain. Instead, Maana leans into Kyoto’s culture of quiet precision. Breakfast is delivered from nearby artisans, often seasonal, always minimal, and best taken slowly while watching the light shift across the garden. The location places you in one of the city’s most visited districts, yet inside, the atmosphere feels detached from the crowds. It demands a certain mindset: curious, patient, comfortable with silence.

Which room would we choose?

Suite 3 for couples seeking space, a private garden and the best opportunity to settle in. Choose Suite 2 for up to four guests: the separate tatami bedroom has two futons, with a living room, reading nook and garden. Suite 1 is the smallest and sits above Kissa Kishin, though its bath has a view of Toyokuni Shrine. None is entirely step-free.

Getting around
From Kyoto Station, Maana estimates around 18 minutes by bus, 28 minutes on foot or 7 minutes by taxi. The property is well placed for exploring southern Higashiyama on foot.
Arriving
Address: 427-18 Myohoin Maekawacho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto 605-0932. Advise the host of your arrival time in advance and follow the check-in instructions sent with your reservation. Contact the property ahead of any late arrival. Early check-in and late check-out are not offered.

Pets are not permitted.
Accessibility
This is a restored traditional townhouse with stairs and no listed lift or adapted rooms. Suite 1 is on the upper floor and accessible only via stairs; Suites 2 and 3 have upstairs bedrooms. Contact the property directly to assess individual access needs.
Travelling with children
The operator accepts children aged 6 and over, counting them toward the suite occupancy as adults. Younger children are not accommodated for safety reasons; cots are not supplied. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Note the steep stairs, particularly for bedrooms upstairs.

Worth knowing

  • A three-suite guesthouse rather than a conventional staffed luxury hotel; expect independence, not a full range of hotel services.
  • Suite 1 is compact, accessed by stairs and located directly above the café. Suites 2 and 3 also have upstairs sleeping areas.
  • The café serves breakfast and brunch but usually closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays; ask about arrangements when reserving breakfast for those days.
  • The property does not offer guest parking and is poorly suited to travellers who require step-free access.
  • Children under 6 and pets are not permitted. Suite 2 is the only suite designed for up to four guests.
  • Kyoto City levies an accommodation tax separately from the lodging rate; the applicable amount depends on the per-person nightly accommodation charge.
  • Confirm the rate conditions before booking; breakfast, cancellation terms and local taxes may vary.
