K5 Tokyo: a former bank with an eye for design

  • A 1923 bank, reimagined
  • Swedish design, Japanese craft
  • One Michelin Key
  • €290–1,600 / night
  • 20 rooms
  • Nihonbashi Kabutocho, Chuo City

The man on Japan’s ¥10,000 banknote would probably recognise K5’s address, if not its red sofas. Eiichi Shibusawa founded the bank whose 1923 annex stands behind the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Its handsome stone façade spent decades hidden beneath steel panels before the building became a hotel with just 20 rooms in 2020.

Stockholm architects Claesson Koivisto Rune have made it feel like the home of a design collector with a weakness for plants. Indigo curtains wrap around the beds, enormous washi lamps glow above cedar and concrete, and much of the furniture was designed especially for K5 and crafted in Japan. There are record players instead of televisions, with access to a vinyl library. Book a High Ceiling K5 Room for its wonderfully generous proportions and soaring ceiling. At 38 square metres, it gives the design room to breathe. The 21 square metre Studios are snug for two, while those fond of a bathtub should opt for a suite.

Downstairs, the boundaries between spaces are deliberately blurred. Start with coffee and homemade waffles at DANCE, return for MARUYAMA’s Japanese cooking, then explore the crimson AKAI BAR, supposedly the private haunt of an eccentric, fictional collector. K5 has helped bring new life to Kabutocho’s old banking streets, now attracting independent cafés and restaurants. Tokyo Station is a 15 minute walk away, making this an appealing base for exploring the city. There’s no spa or spectacular skyline view, but for those who appreciate thoughtful design and a neighbourhood with character, K5 has plenty to recommend it.

The Flânons choice

Which room would we choose?

High Ceiling K5 Room for the signature 38 m² experience with the dramatic top floor ceiling. Choose the High Ceiling Junior Suite if a freestanding bathtub matters.

All 7 room types

Studio

2 adults

21 m²

Double bed · Shower · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

The most compact K5 experience, with a 150 × 200 cm bed and a shower. Attractive for a short solo visit or a couple travelling light; limited space for unpacking.

High Ceiling Studio

2 adults

21 m²

Double bed · Shower · High ceiling · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

The Studio layout on the fourth floor, with an approximately 4.5 m ceiling. Still only 21 m² with a 150 × 200 cm bed; choose for atmosphere rather than extra floor space.

K5 Room

2 adults

38 m²

King bed · Shower · Sitting area · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

The signature K5 room, with a 180 × 200 cm bed, custom furnishings and a shower. Suitable for two adults and one young child sharing the existing bed, subject to hotel policy.

High Ceiling K5 Room

2 adults

38 m²

King bed · Shower · High ceiling · Sitting area · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

Our preferred room for most couples: the full K5 Room experience with a dramatic approximately 4.5 m ceiling on the top floor. Shower only.

Junior Suite

2 adults

40–43 m²

King bed · Bathtub · Shower · Sitting area · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

A generously furnished room with a 180 × 200 cm bed, custom furniture and both a bathtub and shower. A worthwhile step up for bath lovers.

High Ceiling Junior Suite

2 adults

40–43 m²

King bed · Bathtub · Shower · High ceiling · Sitting area · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

Our choice for a special stay: a Junior Suite with the top floor ceiling height, a sitting area and a bathtub as well as a shower.

K5 Suite

2 adults

80 m²

Wide king bed · Bathtub · Shower · High ceiling · Living area · Dining table · Kitchenette · Record player · Minibar · Curated books · Indoor plants

The 80 m² top floor flagship suite, with a 200 × 200 cm bed, separate lounge, dining table, small kitchen, bathtub and shower. Also offered for private events by prior arrangement.

High Ceiling rooms are on the fourth floor and have ceilings approximately 4.5 m high. K5 Rooms offer considerably more comfort for two than the 21 m² Studios, whose beds are 150 cm wide. Junior Suites have bathtubs, unlike the K5 Rooms. All guestrooms have record players rather than televisions. Room outlooks vary, so ask the hotel about a quieter orientation if noise sensitive.

Worth knowing

  • Compact, design led hotel rather than a traditional full service luxury property: no hotel spa, gym or swimming pool is advertised.
  • Rooms have record players and curated vinyl rather than televisions. If you need a blackout dark room or particular lighting for work, discuss your needs with the team.
  • Although children are welcome in some room categories, there are no extra beds. The Studio categories are for a maximum of two guests.
  • Breakfast inclusion, rates and cancellation terms depend on the specific booking plan. K5 does not accept cash.
  • No on site parking. Contact the hotel ahead of time about late arrival, accessibility or a particular room or floor.
  • MARUYAMA is normally closed on Sundays; operating days may change for private events. Its lunch menu was updated to a buffet format in June 2026.
  • Michelin awarded K5 one Michelin Key and retained the distinction in its 2026 selection.
