Il Palazzo Experimental sits on the Zattere, facing the Giudecca Canal, in that part of Venice where the city suddenly feels wider and less breathless. Its home is Palazzo Molin, a sixteenth century Venetian Gothic building with pointed windows, warm brick and a large Adriatica sign still stretched across the façade. It is a beautiful detail because it is not hotel theatre. The palazzo really did serve as the headquarters of Adriatica di Navigazione, so the name on the wall belongs there. Inside, the hotel changes register. Dorothée Meilichzon does not try to recreate old Venice with brocade and chandeliers. She plays with its grammar instead: arches, stripes, terrazzo, lacquer, powder pink, lagoon green, soft curves. The rooms can be compact, but this is Venice, where square metres are negotiated with history, water and gravity. Some rooms look onto the Giudecca Canal, and in those, the view quietly wins every design discussion. The bar gives the hotel its character after dark. Experimental began as a Parisian cocktail name, and here that background matters. Cristina Celestino designed the space as a tribute to Carlo Scarpa, with enough marble, shadow and reflection to make the reference feel Venetian rather than academic. Adriatica, led by Denis Begiqi, serves locally sourced Venetian cooking in the restaurant or garden. It looks appealing and well judged, though probably not the main reason to book. Come for the palazzo, the Zattere light, the garden, the bar and the rare pleasure of a Venetian hotel that feels historic without behaving like a costume drama.
