In Rome, the Colosseum still dominates the skyline with quiet authority. Completed in A.D. 80, the amphitheater once seated more than 50,000 spectators who came for gladiator contests, animal hunts and elaborate public spectacles staged by emperors eager to project power. Its system of ramps, trapdoors and lifts allowed performers and animals to emerge with startling precision, a reminder of the Romans’ technical sophistication. Today, the arena stands partly ruined yet unmistakably intact, a monument that reveals how entertainment, politics and architecture converged at the center of an empire.
