Cima Rosa is for travellers who would rather be given a key than a performance. In Santa Croce, away from the loudest Venetian choreography, this small bed and breakfast occupies part of Palazzo Duodo, a 15th century house on the Grand Canal with Gothic windows, worn brick, timber beams and a courtyard that feels happily unbothered by hotel trends. The appeal is not polish, but eye, taste and the rare luxury of things left at the correct volume. Even the name has a Venetian shrug to it. It came from a misunderstanding that linked the palazzo to Domenico Cimarosa, the 18th century composer. The story turned out to be less neat, but the name stayed, helped by the owner’s love of roses. One suspects Venice approves of such administrative poetry. Inside, rooms are pale and domestic: terrazzo underfoot, old prints, leaded windows, antique chairs, proper beds, curtains that soften rather than announce. Some travellers may find it too quiet, perhaps even too much like staying in someone’s very tasteful house. That is precisely the point. Breakfast is served in the former library or, when the weather allows, in the courtyard among statues, climbing roses and an old wellhead. There may be cake. There should be cake. Across the water stands Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, where Wagner died and where Venice now houses its casino, a view with just the right amount of melodrama. Do not book Cima Rosa for a spa, a destination restaurant or a lobby to photograph before dinner. Book it for Santa Croce, for the Grand Canal without the grandstanding, for the small thrill of returning through a private door after a day of churches, vaporetto stops and wrong turns that become the best part of the afternoon. It is not luxury as spectacle. It is luxury as permission to feel briefly local, with better sheets.
