Aman Tokyo

Location & practical

Thirty Three Floors Above the Rush

  • Japanese minimalism on a monumental scale.
  • Imperial Palace and Mount Fuji views.
  • A spectacular 30m skyline pool.
  • €1,550–13,500 / night
  • 84 rooms
  • Otemachi, Chiyoda

Thirty three floors above Tokyo's financial district, Aman has created something rather unexpected: a Japanese sanctuary in the sky. The first impression is unforgettable. A soaring atrium, nearly 30 metres high, rises beneath an enormous washi paper lantern. Below, water, stone and carefully arranged branches form an indoor garden, while the seemingly endless city unfolds beyond the windows.

Opened in 2014 as Aman's first urban hotel, it was designed by the late Australian architect Kerry Hill, who drew inspiration from traditional Japanese residences. Pale timber, shoji screens, stone and beautifully controlled light give the interiors a distinctly Japanese character. The scale is monumental, yet the atmosphere feels remarkably intimate. Even the smallest of the 84 rooms measures 71 square metres, with deep soaking tubs and magnificent city views. Our preference goes to the west facing suites overlooking the Imperial Palace gardens, where Mount Fuji makes an appearance on clear days.

Temptations to stay indoors are considerable. The spa spans two floors, with Japanese bathing rituals and a spectacular 30 metre swimming pool overlooking the skyline. Arva brings seasonal Italian cooking to the table, while Musashi by Aman serves exceptional Edomae sushi. Chef Hiroyuki Musashi grows his own rice, makes sake from it and even produces some of his ceramic tableware. Clearly, choosing the right fish was only the beginning.

At street level, The Café by Aman sits in a small forest that was cultivated for three years outside Tokyo before being transplanted into the heart of the city. A charming contrast to Otemachi's office towers and immaculate business suits.

The neighbourhood itself is more businesslike than atmospheric, although the Imperial Palace gardens and excellent transport connections make exploring Tokyo easy. And therein lies much of Aman's appeal: spend your day discovering the city's wonderfully chaotic streets, then return to extraordinary architecture, gracious Japanese hospitality and a long soak above the skyline. A rather agreeable arrangement.

The Flânons choice

Which room would we choose?

Deluxe Suite (71 m²): our first choice because its west-facing windows look across the Imperial Palace gardens towards Shinjuku and, on clear days, Mount Fuji. It delivers the hotel’s best-known outlook, a beautiful furo bath and exceptional space without requiring a much larger signature suite.

All 7 room types

Tokyo Suite

77 m²

East facing · Sunrise views · Sunken lounge · Furo bathtub

The east-facing choice for morning light and views over eastern Tokyo. A spacious foyer, sunken lounge and deep Japanese bath; typically a king bed.

Deluxe Suite

71 m²

West facing · Imperial palace views · Mount fuji views · Sunset views · Furo bathtub · Sunken lounge

Our preferred starting point: Imperial Palace gardens and Shinjuku skyline to the west, with Mount Fuji visible on clear days. King or twin beds; a sunken lounge and furo tub.

Garden View Suite

71 m²

Top floor · West facing · Imperial palace views · Mount fuji views · Furo bathtub · Sunken lounge

A west-facing suite on the hotel’s highest guest floor (38), with the same generous footprint as Deluxe but a higher vantage over the gardens and distant skyline.

City Suite

121 m²

Northeast facing · Dual aspect views · Separate living room · Dining area · Workspace · Furo bathtub

A generous step up in space: north-east views, separate living area, dining table and work space.

Panorama Suite

139 m²

Corner suite · Dual aspect views · Separate living room · Dining area · Mini wine cellar · Furo bathtub · Guest toilet

The view-led indulgence for design enthusiasts: corner glazing in two directions, separate bedroom, living and dining areas, a mini wine cellar and a guest powder room. Check orientation before booking.

Grand Suite

141 m²

Large living area · Workspace · City views · Furo bathtub

One of the largest categories, designed for extra living space and skyline views. Its layout and view orientation should be confirmed when reserving.

Aman Suite

157 m²

Corner suite · Dual aspect views · Imperial palace views · Mount fuji views · Separate living room · Dining area · Mini wine cellar · Furo bathtub · Guest toilet

The largest category, with only four suites. Northwest corner views towards the Imperial Palace gardens and Mount Fuji on clear days, plus separate living and dining space.

For the same west-facing perspective from the highest guest floor, consider the 71 m² Garden View Suite; the premium buys elevation rather than extra space. The 139 m² corner Panorama Suite is the architectural indulgence, with dual-aspect windows and separate living and dining rooms, although its view orientation should be confirmed. The east-facing Tokyo Suite suits sunrise lovers; the 157 m² Aman Suite is the largest option with Palace and Fuji views. Fuji visibility always depends on the weather. Specify bedding and any additional guest requirements when booking.

Worth knowing

  • Otemachi is a well-connected financial quarter rather than an atmospheric old-Tokyo neighbourhood; Otemachi Station connects beneath the tower and Tokyo Station is nearby.
  • The hotel’s lobby, lounge and restaurants also receive non-resident guests. The public spaces may feel lively, particularly during afternoon tea.
  • Reserve Musashi by Aman well ahead: its omakase counter has limited seating, is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and welcomes diners aged 13 and above.
  • Children aged 15 and under may use the pool only with an accompanying adult; most other spa and fitness facilities have a 16-plus age policy. Confirm rules before visiting.
  • Daily breakfast, non-alcoholic in-room refreshments and shared spa/pool/gym access are listed as Aman stay inclusions; paid treatments, private instruction and restaurant meals are additional.
  • Price guide: budget_min and budget_max are indicative EUR amounts per room per night, not fixed bookable rates or contractual limits. The lower figure reflects public entry-category offers; the upper figure reflects unusually expensive peak dates in a published hotel-price calendar. Most ordinary-date quotes fall well below that upper figure. Taxes and inclusions depend on the booking channel; verify the final payable total.
  • Views differ by suite orientation. Request a west-facing room for the Imperial Palace gardens and a possible Mount Fuji sighting; visibility is not guaranteed.
