Il Gatto Nero
Via Della Liberta', 69, 22012 Cernobbio CO, Italy — Cernobbio — Italy
About
Il Gatto Nero sits high above Cernobbio on the road toward Monte Bisbino, with a terrace and dining rooms looking out over the southwestern branch of Lake Como. That setting matters, yet the place has kept the character of a proper restaurant rather than a mere panoramic perch. Inside, the mood is warm and slightly theatrical, with art filled rooms, polished service and the kind of dining room that still believes dinner deserves an occasion. What makes it compelling is the kitchen’s clear affection for Lombard and lake side gastronomy. The restaurant describes its cooking as Italian and Mediterranean, grounded in regional tradition with contemporary touches. On the menu, you see that approach in house grissini and whipped butter, charcuterie and cheeses, tasting menus, and richer signatures that outside observers have singled out for dishes such as cotoletta alla Milanese and braised meat tortellini with Barolo, butter and Parmesan. The menu also credits the restaurant’s historic chef, Andrea Mannarino, which gives the whole operation a sense of continuity rather than culinary acrobatics for their own sake. Il Gatto Nero has been part of the Lake Como conversation for decades, with the current restaurant tracing itself to 1988. That longevity shows. Places like this endure because they understand a simple truth: craftsmanship tastes better when it comes with memory, discipline and a room that knows exactly what it wants to be.
