Braidense National Library
Via Brera, 28, 20121 Milano MI, Italy — Milano — Italy
About
Inside Palazzo Brera, in the middle of Milan’s most cultivated quarter, the Braidense National Library has the rare authority of a place that was built to civilise a city. Founded in 1770 by Maria Theresa of Austria and opened to the public in 1786, it grew from the Pertusati collection and from the former Jesuit holdings, then became a legal deposit library for the State of Milan. The setting matters almost as much as the books: Palazzo Brera rose from a former monastery and Jesuit college, with Francesco Maria Richini giving it its severe grandeur and Giuseppe Piermarini shaping key parts of the library and the entrance on Via Brera. What stays with you is the atmosphere of ordered intelligence, especially in the Maria Teresa Hall, where the scale is formal yet never cold.
