About

A short walk from the market town of Woodbridge, Melton Hall stands with the quiet confidence of a house that has watched Suffolk life unfold for centuries. The present hall was built in 1807 for the Wood family, local solicitors whose connection to the site reaches back to the sixteenth century. The architecture is pure Regency restraint. Pink washed brick elevations, tall sash windows and a slate roof give the house a dignified rhythm, while a half round Doric porch provides an elegant entrance that feels perfectly proportioned rather than grandiose. Inside, the atmosphere is that rare blend of country house formality and genuine domestic warmth. Rooms are generous yet light, arranged with the calm logic typical of early nineteenth century design. Beyond the façade, gardens unfold into lawns, trees and meadows that soften the boundary between house and countryside, with the River Deben and the sailing culture of Woodbridge just minutes away. What makes Melton Hall compelling is its authenticity. It was not designed as a spectacle but as a serious family residence, and it has remained one for most of its life. Staying here feels less like visiting a hotel and more like briefly inheriting a piece of quietly confident English architectural history.
