About
In Mérida’s historic center, a short walk from the cathedral and the restless life of Plaza Grande, Hotel Sevilla occupies a house that has watched the city grow since the early colonial era. The structure began as a 16th century casona, built not long after the Spanish founded Mérida in 1542, when thick limestone walls and shaded courtyards were the only sensible response to the Yucatán heat. Those original bones remain. Weathered arches, stone walls and generous ceilings still frame the spaces where a merchant family once lived. The recent transformation by the architecture studio Zeller & Moye treats the building with admirable restraint. Rather than smoothing away the centuries, the designers left portions of the old structure almost archaeological. Concrete elements appear with quiet confidence beside the ruins, forming a spiral stair, terraces and a courtyard pool that catches the shade for much of the day. The result feels like a conversation between eras rather than a restoration that pretends history never happened. Rooms gather around leafy patios in the classic colonial manner, where breezes move slowly through colonnades and the rhythm of Mérida softens into something contemplative. Outside the door lies one of Mexico’s most atmospheric historic districts, but within the walls the mood is calm, almost monastic. Hotel Sevilla understands that architecture, when treated with patience and a little humility, can make four centuries feel remarkably present.
