About

Rising above the forests of Bavaria near Füssen, Neuschwanstein Castle crowns a rugged hill overlooking the Alpsee and the Alps beyond. Commissioned in 1869 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it was conceived as a romantic vision of medieval chivalry. Limestone towers, slender turrets and ornate interiors inspired by Richard Wagner’s operas create a dreamlike silhouette against the mountain sky. Though Ludwig died before its completion, the castle endures as a symbol of fantasy, solitude and royal imagination.
