About

High above the Strait of Gibraltar, where Tangier looks both to Africa and Europe, Villa Mabrouka carries the quiet confidence of a house that has lived several lives. The villa became widely known in the late 1990s when Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought it as their retreat in Tangier, a city the designer had adored since the 1960s. After years behind discreet walls, the property reopened as a small hotel following a meticulous restoration by British designer Jasper Conran. The architecture remains that of a refined Tangier villa, all white façades, arched openings and deep terraces overlooking the sea. Conran introduced richly patterned tiles, antique textiles and a calm palette that respects Moroccan craft without theatrical excess. The gardens descend towards the cliffs, shaded by palms and scented with citrus. Meals are served in salons that feel closer to a private residence than a hotel dining room, with seasonal dishes that move easily between Moroccan flavours and Mediterranean simplicity. Tangier has long attracted artists, writers and elegant wanderers. Staying here gives the rare sense of stepping into that lineage rather than merely observing it. Villa Mabrouka feels personal, discreet and deeply rooted in the city. Exactly the sort of address that reminds you why Tangier has always seduced the curious traveller.
