Tiefenbrunner - Schlosskellerei Turmhof
Via Castello, 4, 39040 Niclara BZ, Italy
About
The first surprise at Tiefenbrunner is hearing German spoken beneath a medieval tower while standing in an Italian vineyard. That contradiction tells you almost everything about South Tyrol. The estate sits just south of Merano, where rows of vines stretch across the valley floor and climb into the mountains beyond. At the centre stands the Turmhof tower, a landmark that predates the winery itself and has watched over this landscape long before the Tiefenbrunner family began producing wine here in 1675. Many visitors arrive expecting a classic Italian wine estate. Instead, they find a place shaped by centuries of Alpine history. Until the end of the First World War, this region belonged to the Austro Hungarian Empire. The German language endured, the architecture followed its own path and South Tyrol developed a character that feels entirely distinct from the rest of Italy. The setting does much of the talking. Looking up from the estate, you can spot vineyards climbing towards elevations where viticulture starts to resemble a mountain sport. Some of Tiefenbrunner's highest plots lie above 1,000 metres. Harvesting remains largely manual and the temperature difference between day and night gives many of the wines a remarkable precision. Yet wine is only part of the attraction. The pleasure of visiting comes from wandering through the grounds, pausing beneath the tower, and realising how many stories have passed through this valley. Merchants, pilgrims and armies once travelled the route connecting northern Europe with Italy. Today, travellers stop for a glass of Müller Thurgau and a view of the mountains.
