About

Few hotels allow you to sleep quite so literally inside a political miscalculation as Thornbury Castle. Built in 1511 by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, the castle was designed less to repel armies than to impress a king, which in Tudor England turned out to be the more dangerous ambition. Stafford became too wealthy, too influential and perhaps a little too proud for the comfort of Henry VIII, who had him executed for treason in 1521 before the castle was even fully completed. Henry promptly claimed the property for himself. Efficient, in a rather Tudor way. Fourteen years later, Henry returned with Anne Boleyn during their royal progress through the West Country, staying for ten days in surroundings that still feel surprisingly intact today. Walking through the gatehouse, past thick stone walls, arrow slits and cavernous fireplaces, you understand why Thornbury works so well as a hotel. It does not try to modernise history into bland luxury. It allows the building’s age, scale and occasional awkwardness to remain visible. The best rooms are genuinely atmospheric, with carved four poster beds, tapestries and windows deep enough to sit inside with a drink while contemplating the life expectancy of Tudor courtiers. Floors slope slightly, corridors creak, and some bathrooms feel less theatrical than the bedrooms themselves, though oddly that restraint helps preserve the illusion. Dinner is served beneath vaulted ceilings where candlelight does most of the decorating. The cooking leans towards refined British comfort rather than culinary experimentation, and the afternoon tea feels particularly suited to the setting. You come here for the sensation of temporarily inhabiting another century, not for polished contemporary perfection.
