About

At The Leela Palace Udaipur, it is the approach that wins you over first. You cross Lake Pichola by boat while the white City Palace rises ahead like a mirage and old Udaipur slowly unfolds behind it in a haze of domes, balconies, and tangled rooftops. Somewhere nearby, a waiter is already preparing to hand you a cold towel with the timing of a Formula 1 pit crew. The Leela understands spectacle, though thankfully with enough restraint to avoid becoming theatrical nonsense. Built in traditional Mewar style, the hotel uses hand carved stone screens, silver leaf detailing, courtyards, and vast marble interiors that glow honey gold at sunset. Rajasthan has never been accused of subtlety and that is precisely the charm. The setting does most of the heavy lifting. Lake Pichola itself dates back to the 14th century and was originally created by a local tribesman, long before the palaces arrived. Today the lake remains Udaipur’s grand stage set. From the terraces you can spot Jag Mandir, where the future emperor Shah Jahan is said to have taken refuge before building the Taj Mahal. Udaipur never misses an opportunity for architectural drama. Rooms are polished and spacious rather than overly ornate. A wise decision. Outside your window sits one of India’s greatest urban views, so over decorating the room would simply be greedy. The atmosphere shifts beautifully throughout the day: serene mornings with boats crossing the lake, blazing afternoon light on the palaces, then evenings filled with lanterns, live music, and the faint sound of temple bells drifting across the water. Food is strongest when it stays local. Rich Rajasthani curries, smoky kebabs, and fragrant breads arrive with admirable confidence. The international menu feels slightly secondary, much like ordering a Caesar salad at a Venetian bacaro. This is not the place for travelers seeking raw intimacy or boutique understatement. The Leela is grand, cinematic, and unapologetically romantic. Fortunately, Udaipur gives it the perfect excuse.
