The Hay-Adams
800 16th St NW, Washington, DC 20006, USA — Washington — United States
About
Across Lafayette Square, with the White House almost close enough to overhear, The Hay Adams carries the quiet confidence of old Washington. Completed in 1928 by developer Harry Wardman and designed by Jules Henri de Sibour, the limestone building draws on Italian Renaissance forms, its dignified facade and finely carved details giving the corner a sense of ceremony. The hotel stands on the former site of the homes of John Hay, statesman and secretary of state, and the historian Henry Adams, whose friendship once shaped the intellectual life of the capital. Inside, polished wood, discreet corridors and softly lit rooms feel attuned to the rhythms of diplomacy. In the bar, political gossip circulates with the cocktails, while outside the White House keeps its steady watch. History here does not announce itself loudly. It simply lingers in the walls.
