The Celestine
727 Toulouse St, New Orleans, LA 70130, USA — New Orleans — United States
About
On a quiet stretch of Toulouse Street in the French Quarter stands The Celestine, a small hotel with a past that feels inseparable from the city around it. The building dates to 1791, a period when New Orleans was still shaped by French and Spanish rule, and its architecture carries that layered heritage with ease. Wrought iron balconies lean over the street while rooms gather around a lush courtyard where a three tier fountain murmurs through the humid air. It is the sort of courtyard that makes sense only in New Orleans, equal parts refuge and stage set. History here comes with flavor. The house once belonged to Antoine Amédée Peychaud, the apothecary who created Peychaud’s bitters, a key ingredient of the Sazerac and an enduring symbol of the city’s cocktail culture. In the 1940s the writer Tennessee Williams stayed within these walls while working on A Streetcar Named Desire. Today the hotel remains intimate in scale, with just a handful of rooms, preserving the feeling of a private residence that happens to sit in the beating heart of the Quarter.
