teamLab Borderless

Location & practical

Beneath the sculpted terraces of Azabudai Hills, Tokyo suddenly disappears. Inside teamLab Borderless there are no windows, no prescribed route and, rather wonderfully, no museum map. Flowers drift across walls and follow visitors into adjoining rooms, waterfalls spill over floors, and vast fields of light respond to the people moving through them. You quickly stop trying to work out where you are.

The idea first appeared in Odaiba in 2018 and became a phenomenon, attracting some 2.3 million visitors from more than 160 countries and regions in its first year. After closing there in 2022, Borderless resurfaced in 2024 beneath Azabudai Hills, the enormous Tokyo redevelopment that took around three decades to realise. Heatherwick Studio shaped its flowing lower buildings and landscaped public spaces, making the approach almost as interesting as the museum hidden below.

Despite all the technology, the clever part is how little of it you actually think about. The works wander, overlap and react, turning spectators into part of the scenery. Some rooms are exhilarating, others almost hypnotic, and occasionally you will realise you have absolutely no idea how to get back to where you started.

One practical detail deserves unusually strict attention: admission is timed, and that time is taken seriously. Arriving early does not earn you early access, only extra appreciation of the entrance. Once inside, however, you can wander at your own pace. With Tokyo Tower close by, the two make a particularly good pairing: one icon of postwar Tokyo above ground, one distinctly contemporary version beneath it.

Good to know.
