About

There is something mildly disorienting about arriving at Sun Ranch for the first time. You are deep in the lush Byron Bay hinterland, surrounded by macadamia farms and subtropical forest, yet suddenly everything starts looking like a film set from 1970s California. Timber cabins, horses tied to fences, rusty steel, Navajo blankets, low leather chairs around outdoor fire pits. Somehow it works. The property stands on former farmland in Coopers Shoot, a hilltop area that quietly became one of Australia’s most coveted rural addresses. Byron Bay may attract the headlines, but this is where many designers, musicians and founders disappeared to when they wanted space, silence and ocean views without the crowds. Early mornings here come with mist rolling through the valleys and kangaroos grazing outside the cabins. By afternoon, someone is usually drinking natural wine near the pool while talking about surfing conditions at Wategos. What saves Sun Ranch from becoming overly theatrical is that it never feels too polished. The rooms have warmth rather than perfection. Open fireplaces crackle at night, boots lie casually beside the entrance doors and dinner often stretches for hours around the communal table. The kitchen leans heavily into local produce cooked over fire, which suits the ranch atmosphere far better than overly refined tasting menus ever could. Australia has plenty of beautiful boutique hotels, though very few with this much personality. Sun Ranch could easily have become an Instagram cliché. Instead, it feels oddly convincing, like a group of well travelled friends built the place they always wanted to escape to themselves.
