About

The most influential winery in Alto Adige does not belong to a famous family. It belongs to more than 300 of them. Founded in 1907, St. Michael Eppan is a cooperative, yet it has done something many prestigious private estates never achieve: it changed the reputation of an entire wine region. For decades Alto Adige was known largely within Italy. Then, in 1986, winemaker Hans Terzer released the first Sanct Valentin Sauvignon Blanc. At the time, betting the future of a winery on a Sauvignon Blanc seemed almost eccentric. Today, the wine is considered one of Italy's benchmarks and helped draw international attention to the region. The drive here already feels distinctive. Vineyards cover the hills around Appiano, interrupted by castle towers, church spires and the occasional palm tree. The Dolomites dominate the horizon, yet the climate has enough Mediterranean influence for olives and cypress trees to thrive. Few corners of Europe combine such different worlds so naturally. The winery itself avoids grand gestures. Historic cellars and modern production spaces sit side by side, quietly focused on the work at hand. The real fascination lies in the stories behind the bottles. The vineyards stretch across a patchwork of soils left behind by ancient glaciers, while local conversations effortlessly drift between German and Italian. Until the end of the First World War, this region belonged to Austria. You still feel that layered identity everywhere.
