Six Senses Douro Valley
Quinta Vale de Abraão, 5100-758 Samodães, Portugal
About
Long before guests arrived for vineyard picnics and spa treatments, Vale Abraão had already earned a small place in Douro history. In the late nineteenth century, the estate generated its own electricity, becoming the first house in the valley to switch on electric lights. Today, the views remain far more impressive than the technology. Six Senses Douro Valley occupies the former manor house overlooking one of Europe’s most remarkable wine landscapes. The Douro was officially demarcated in 1756, making it one of the world’s oldest regulated wine regions, and centuries of vineyard terraces still shape every hillside. From the hotel gardens, the valley seems to unfold in layers of vines, olive trees and winding river bends. The manor is handsome rather than grand. There is a tower, stone staircases, old trees and shaded terraces, but the landscape keeps stealing the attention. Even from the swimming pool, your eyes drift towards the vineyards rather than the water. The atmosphere changes throughout the day. Early mornings belong to the valley. By afternoon, guests disappear towards local quintas, river cruises or long lunches accompanied by Douro wines that deserve far greater international fame. As evening approaches, life gathers around the kitchen gardens. Herbs, citrus trees and vegetable beds surround tables where dinner feels relaxed rather than ceremonious. Inside, Six Senses has resisted the temptation to recreate a historic country house. The interiors are contemporary, calm and comfortable. The estate also inspired Vale Abraão, the celebrated novel by Agustina Bessa Luís, later adapted for cinema by Manoel de Oliveira. It is a fitting connection. The story may bear the estate’s name, but the landscape remains the main character.
