About

Approaching Sekizenkan in Shima Onsen, many first time visitors have the same reaction: this cannot be real. A red bridge crosses the stream, wooden facades rise in layers, lantern light glows against mountain air, and the whole composition looks uncannily close to the dream world of Spirited Away. Whether it directly inspired the film matters less than the obvious truth that it feels like a place imagined by someone with excellent taste. Then comes the second surprise: it is not a themed fantasy but a living inn founded in 1691. While Europe was busy with powdered wigs and palace politics, travellers were already arriving here to soak in Shima’s mineral waters. For centuries, merchants, officials and weary wanderers came for the same reason modern guests do: hot water, mountain calm and the hope of leaving improved. Sekizenkan’s architecture reads like a timeline. The older timber sections preserve the atmosphere of classic ryokan Japan, with polished wood, tatami rooms and corridors that creak with confidence. The celebrated bathhouse, Genroku no Yu, has vaulted stone ceilings and arched windows, giving a communal bath the dignity of a small cathedral. Later wings introduced more comfort and softer modern touches, proof that even tradition occasionally upgrades the plumbing. And that leads to the practical point many romantic travellers discover too late: Sekizenkan is several experiences under one name. The historic Honkan is wonderfully authentic, but simpler, older and less comfort driven. Other wings feel more refined or more contemporary, with stronger amenities and an easier stay for newcomers. So do your homework. Check the exact building, room style, bathroom setup and renovation level before booking.
