About

In the quiet countryside near Niseko, far from the choreography of ski resorts and tour buses, Slow Hotel Shiguchi unfolds like a private thought. The property revolves around a meticulously restored kominka, a traditional farmhouse relocated from another part of Hokkaido and rebuilt with an almost obsessive respect for craft. Dark timber beams, textured plaster walls and wide openings toward the forest create an atmosphere that feels both monastic and sensual. The hotel belongs to the creative universe of art collector Shouya Grigg and integrates contemporary artworks with vernacular architecture in a way that feels deliberate rather than decorative. Each villa is designed as a retreat from velocity. There are deep soaking baths, wood burning stoves and views that change with snow, fog and summer light. Dining is quietly ambitious, focused on local produce and seasonal game, often served in an intimate setting that encourages slow conversation. Expect silence, distance and a certain introspection. There is no urban energy here, nor an abundance of distractions. What you gain instead is rare emotional clarity and the sense of inhabiting a piece of Hokkaido rather than observing it.
