About

Nelson Mandela finished large parts of Long Walk to Freedom at the Saxon. That fact alone would justify a visit. Yet what makes the story interesting is that the building where he worked was never intended to be a hotel in the first place. The property began life as the private residence of entrepreneur Douw Steyn, who named it after his favourite racehorse. Decades later, it remains one of Johannesburg's most celebrated addresses, although "hotel" never feels like quite the right word. The scale is impressive, but the atmosphere is surprisingly domestic. You move through gardens, courtyards and quiet lounges that feel designed for living rather than showing off. That residential character explains much of the Saxon's appeal. While many luxury hotels compete through spectacle, the Saxon relies on space, calm and confidence. Ten acres of gardens separate guests from the energy of Johannesburg, creating a setting that feels almost improbable given its proximity to Sandton's business district. Inside, African art, dark timber and water features give the property a strong sense of place without resorting to safari clichés. Breakfast on the terrace often stretches longer than intended. The spa remains one of the city's favourites, attracting plenty of Johannesburg residents who have no need for a room upstairs. The trade off is obvious. You do not stay here to immerse yourself in the city's street life. Galleries, restaurants and cultural attractions require a short drive. The Saxon is a retreat first and an urban hotel second. For travellers who value privacy, history and a genuine sense of occasion, few hotels in Africa have aged quite so gracefully.
