About

One of the oddest things about Salvaterra Country House & Spa is that it barely feels Portuguese at first glance. The drive from Lisbon takes less than an hour and passes through exactly the sort of landscape you expect in Ribatejo: farmland, horses and long flat roads running towards the Tagus. Then suddenly there are palms everywhere. Not a few decorative palms around a swimming pool, but an entire garden that seems determined to convince you that Portugal has a tropical climate. The hotel is built around that illusion. Paths disappear into dense greenery. Water lilies float on quiet ponds. Breakfast arrives each morning in a basket and is best enjoyed on your terrace while trying to identify where the garden ends and the hotel begins. The rooms follow the same logic. Terracotta floors, natural materials, mosquito nets above the beds and freestanding bathtubs create a relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from Lisbon despite being close enough for an easy weekend escape. The surrounding town has its own story. Salvaterra de Magos was once popular with Portuguese royalty, who came here for hunting and falconry. These days visitors are more likely to spend their time in a wood fired hot tub hidden among the palms or reading a book beside the fire pit. Salvaterra offers the surprisingly convincing feeling that you have disappeared somewhere very far away, when in reality you have barely left Lisbon behind.
