About

In the 16th arrondissement, behind a discreet gate and a long gravel drive, Saint James Paris plays a clever game with expectations. It presents itself as a château, yet it is in fact the last remaining hotel in Paris housed in a former private mansion set within its own garden. The building dates back to 1892 and once served as the Thiers Foundation, a residence for promising scholars. One imagines quiet intellectual ambition; today, the mood leans towards cultivated indulgence. The architecture carries a neoclassical discipline softened by ivy and a sense of distance from the city. Step inside and the tone shifts. Interior designer Bambi Sloan approached the place with a theatrical instinct, mixing references to hunting lodges, cabinets of curiosity and Parisian salons. The result is unapologetically decorative, occasionally eccentric, and far from minimalist. It works, provided you accept the premise. There is a Michelin starred restaurant, Bellefeuille, where the cuisine follows the seasons with a refined, plant forward sensibility. The garden, rare for Paris, becomes part of the experience rather than a backdrop. Breakfast on the terrace in good weather feels almost implausible given the location. Service is polished without stiffness, though the overall experience depends on your tolerance for stylistic boldness. Those seeking calm restraint may find it busy. Those who enjoy character will feel they have found something increasingly rare in Paris: a hotel with a point of view.
