Royal Mansour Marrakech
Rue Abou Abbas El Sebti، Marrakech 40000, Morocco
About
The first surprise at Royal Mansour is that it does not feel like a hotel at all. Commissioned by King Mohammed VI and opened in 2010, Royal Mansour was conceived as a celebration of Moroccan craftsmanship on a scale that would be difficult to justify in almost any commercial project. Rather than building a palace filled with suites, the creators constructed an entire private medina. Behind its walls are 53 individual riads, each spread across three floors and hidden behind carved cedar doors. You do not enter a corridor to reach your room. You enter your own house. The architecture is extraordinary. More than 1,500 artisans spent years creating intricate zellige mosaics, hand carved plasterwork, painted cedar ceilings and bronze lanterns. The level of detail borders on obsession. Guests often find themselves examining a doorway or fountain with the same attention usually reserved for a museum piece. The service is equally unusual. Beneath the property runs a hidden network of underground tunnels used by staff, allowing housekeeping, room service and butlers to move almost invisibly throughout the hotel. It creates an uncanny sense that everything appears precisely when needed while preserving the privacy of each riad. Location is another strength. Royal Mansour sits just outside Marrakech's historic medina, close enough to reach the souks, Bahia Palace and Jemaa el Fna within minutes, yet far enough removed to feel remarkably calm. After a morning navigating the city's intensity, returning through the hotel's gates feels like stepping into another world. The restaurants, developed with the involvement of acclaimed French chef Yannick Alléno, are among the city's finest, while the spectacular spa occupies a luminous white lattice structure that contrasts beautifully with the traditional architecture elsewhere on the estate. There is one caveat. Royal Mansour delivers perfection with extraordinary consistency, but some travellers may find it almost too polished. Marrakech's most charming riads often reveal themselves through imperfections and chance encounters. Royal Mansour is carefully orchestrated from beginning to end. Yet few hotels anywhere express the identity of their destination so completely. Many luxury properties could be relocated to another country with only minor adjustments. Royal Mansour could only exist in Morocco, and that is precisely what makes it unforgettable.
