Río Verde canyoning

About
The drive to Otívar already feels like a warm up. Whitewashed houses fade behind you, mountain bends tighten, and the Sierra de Almijara starts looking gloriously wild. Then comes Río Verde, Andalusia’s liquid playground, where limestone canyons and striking turquoise water turn a half day outdoors into something people talk about for years. This is canyoning at its most addictive: walking through a dramatic gorge, swimming through clear pools, sliding over smooth rock, abseiling down waterfalls and jumping into deep natural basins. Yes, jumps can reach around 9 metres when conditions allow and guides approve it. Just as important, smaller jumps and alternatives are usually available, so nobody is forced into heroics before lunch. One of the great surprises is how family friendly it can be. Many guided outings accept children from around 9 years old, depending on route, season and confidence in water. That means parents get adventure, children get bragging rights, and everyone gets soaked. The real highlight is the rhythm of the day. One moment you are edging through a narrow canyon corridor with cliffs rising above you. The next you are floating in jade coloured water, then clipping into a rope descent, then laughing at the face someone made before a jump. Nature handles the entertainment schedule with remarkable efficiency. Starting from Otívar adds charm. It is still a proper Andalusian village rather than a tourism machine. Afterwards, a cold drink on a terrace feels richly deserved, and the nearby Costa Tropical is close enough for a lazy beach finish. Río Verde is excellent news for anyone who feared southern Spain would only offer sunbeds and sangria.
