About

The first surprise about Raffles is that it feels far less theatrical than expected. After decades of awards, coffee table books and travel features, you arrive prepared for a carefully preserved grand hotel. Instead, the place feels oddly practical. The verandas are broad because Singapore is hot. The ceilings are high because air conditioning did not exist. The courtyards are filled with shade because somebody had to make life bearable in the tropics long before modern engineering arrived. That practicality is precisely what gives Raffles its charm. Opened in 1887 and rebuilt into its iconic white colonial form in 1899, the hotel has witnessed much of Singapore's transformation from trading port to global city. Writers such as Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling stayed here, finding inspiration among the merchants, adventurers and eccentric characters passing through its halls. In 1915, bartender Ngiam Tong Boon created the Singapore Sling at Long Bar. Less famously, a tiger escaped from a circus in 1902 and was eventually shot beneath the hotel's Bar & Billiard Room, a reminder that Singapore was once a very different place. What makes Raffles remarkable is how little it relies on these stories. Many historic hotels feel like museums with room service. Raffles still feels alive. Guests drift between arcades and gardens, linger over breakfast in the courtyards and retreat to suites that are among the largest in Singapore. The atmosphere is calm without feeling sleepy, elegant without trying too hard. Travellers looking for cutting edge design, rooftop drama or the city's most exciting dining scene may find stronger contenders elsewhere. Raffles belongs to a different category. It is one of the few hotels where the building itself remains the main attraction. By the time you leave, it is rarely the thread count or the marble bathroom that stays with you. It is the feeling of wandering through a place that has somehow remained convincing while the city around it reinvented itself again and again. Few hotels carry that weight so lightly.
