Quinta Filippa

Quinta Filippa feels less like checking into a hotel than arriving at a rather exceptional country house. That is partly because it started as one. Mike and Nikki bought the estate in 2017 with the idea of creating a family holiday home, naming it after Mike’s eldest daughter, Filippa. The family connection runs deeper still: Mike’s mother grew up nearby, and the old oven at the quinta once served as the village bread oven, a place where neighbours gathered to bake and spend time together.

That sense of history has been handled with restraint. Restored walls, old wells and arches sit alongside interiors by Circle studiO, where reclaimed wood, natural stone, soft textiles, handmade ceramics and contemporary furniture create an atmosphere that is warm rather than showy. There are earthy colours, plenty of greenery and just enough polish to remind you that this is a luxury hotel. The surrounding gardens, woodland, ponds and olive trees do the rest.

Quinta Filippa is deliberately conceived as a destination in itself, and that makes sense once you understand the rhythm of the place. Stays require at least two nights and include breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as two group activities each day. Chef Paolo works around vegetables, herbs and seasonal produce from the estate and local growers, with fish and meat playing supporting roles. Meals can be shared communally or taken more privately, depending on how sociable you happen to feel.

Wellbeing is woven into the stay without turning it into a compulsory self improvement project. There is a heated 25 metre saltwater pool, steam room, sauna, natural ponds and spaces for yoga and Pilates. Private treatments, guided hikes, cycling, personal training, bread baking and other individual experiences can be added according to preference. Doing very little remains a perfectly respectable option.

The idea is to stay put for a while, but not to disconnect from Portugal altogether. The programme draws on local food, crafts, landscape and traditions, making Quinta Filippa a gentle introduction to the Central region rather than an isolated bubble. It should suit travellers who value privacy, design, food and space more than a packed sightseeing schedule.

Our room pick: the Garden Suite. At 60 m², it combines a separate living room and bedroom with a private outdoor sitting area overlooking the garden and pool. It gives you much of the scale and privacy of the flagship Filippa Suite without feeling as though you chose the room simply because it was the most expensive one.
