About
PEJITE is one of those places that would struggle to exist anywhere except Tokyo. Hidden above the streets of Aoyama, it sells old Japanese furniture that was never intended to become collectible. A cabinet from the Meiji period stands beside a weathered workbench. Nearby sits a merchant's counter whose corners have been rounded by decades of use. None of it looks precious. That is part of the appeal. The shop began in Mashiko, the pottery town associated with the Japanese folk craft movement. Its founder built a reputation by restoring furniture in a way that irritated some antique purists. Many pieces were stripped back to lighter wood tones, revealing grain and imperfections hidden beneath generations of dark finishes. Today that aesthetic feels remarkably current. What makes PEJITE memorable is that it treats wear as a feature rather than a flaw. Drawers slide imperfectly. Surfaces carry ink stains and scratches. The objects are valued because they were used, not despite it. Most visitors arrive from Omotesando, where luxury brands spend fortunes creating the appearance of permanence. Five minutes inside PEJITE and you start wondering whether the old cabinet in the corner might outlive all of them.
