About

Rising with confident grandeur along Via delle Quattro Fontane, Palazzo Barberini delivers one of Rome’s most persuasive encounters with Baroque architecture. Begun in 1625 for the powerful Barberini family, the palace became a showcase of ambition, with Carlo Maderno shaping its stately façade and Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini contributing to its interior drama. The sweeping oval staircase by Borromini feels almost cinematic, while Bernini’s grand stair offers theatrical scale and light. Inside, ceilings explode with movement. Pietro da Cortona’s vast fresco The Triumph of Divine Providence turns an entire salon into a swirling allegory of papal prestige. Today the palace houses part of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica, where Caravaggio’s stark intensity hangs within rooms designed for splendour. A visit reveals how art, architecture and power once moved in perfect synchrony, leaving a setting that still feels bold, intelligent and irresistibly Roman.
