About

A royal hunting lodge sounds like a place where one imagines muddy boots and barking dogs. The Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi quickly corrects that assumption. Designed by Filippo Juvarra from 1729 for the House of Savoy, this is hunting transformed into theatre. Just outside Turin, the palace rises at the end of grand avenues like a stage set placed in the landscape with complete confidence. The first sensation is geometry. Wings radiate outward, courtyards unfold in perfect order, and above it all stands the famous bronze stag on the roof, watching the plains as if still expecting the next royal procession. Inside, restraint gives way to delight. Frescoes swirl across ceilings, mirrors multiply candlelight, chinoiserie details appear where you least expect them, and rooms seem arranged for elegant gossip rather than practical living. What makes Stupinigi so enjoyable is that it feels playful. Versailles can intimidate. Many palaces can exhaust. This one charms. It was built for pleasure, seasonal escape and aristocratic spectacle, and that lighter spirit still lingers. You can imagine silk rustling through corridors, carriages arriving in clouds of dust, and nobles pretending the hunt was the main event. Its location also helps. Turin offers discipline, arcades and chocolate. Stupinigi adds exuberance within easy reach. A superb half day excursion that changes the rhythm of a city trip.
