One&Only Palmilla
Carr. Transpeninsular, Tourist Corridor, 23400 San José del Cabo, B.C.S., Mexico
About
Before Los Cabos became shorthand for polished villas and wellness schedules, Palmilla was already the address. In the 1950s, when Baja still felt remote and faintly adventurous, Bing Crosby came for sun, Ernest Hemingway for escape, and Dwight Eisenhower for reasons one hopes included a decent margarita. Long before the influencer era, this was where famous people disappeared well. Today the resort has been thoroughly renewed, yet the best part remains its geography. Palmilla sits on a promontory where the Pacific begins yielding to the Sea of Cortez, with one of the swimmable beaches in the area below. In Cabo, that detail matters more than many chandeliers. Arrival is lush, low rise and calm rather than showy. Whitewashed buildings, red tiled roofs and palms nod to classic Mexican coastal style without turning theatrical. Rooms are spacious, highly polished and deeply comfortable, backed by the sort of service culture that notices what you need before you do. Butler service is included, which can feel excessive until someone quietly fixes your day. The current Palmilla understands modern luxury’s true currency: privacy. You are close enough to San José del Cabo for galleries and dinner, far enough to feel removed from the Cabo circus. Golfers have a Jack Nicklaus course. Spa loyalists are well supplied. The restaurant by Jean Georges gives the place culinary credibility beyond poolside habits. What makes Palmilla compelling is not trendiness but longevity. Resorts often peak, fade, renovate, repeat. Palmilla has managed to remain relevant across presidents, movie stars and changing definitions of taste. That is harder than opening beautifully.
