Ochiairo
1887-1 Yugashima, Izu, Shizuoka 410-3206, Japan — Izu — Japan
About
In the forested hills of Izu Yugashima, Ochiairo feels like a carefully preserved fragment of another Japan. The ryokan opened in 1934 as a retreat for industrialist Masutaro Ochiai and still carries the quiet confidence of the Taisho era elite who once gathered here. Its architecture alone justifies the journey. Long wooden corridors hover above the Kano River, tatami salons unfold in precise proportions and a lacquered bridge connects pavilions designed in refined sukiya style. Much of the structure is now registered as a national cultural property. Days begin with mist drifting through maple trees and end in steaming outdoor baths carved into rock. The cuisine follows the same philosophy of restrained excellence. Kaiseki dinners celebrate local mountain vegetables, river fish and delicate broths presented with almost theatrical timing. Writers and artists have long sought inspiration in this secluded valley. After a meticulous restoration completed in recent years, Ochiairo balances heritage with discreet modern comfort. It offers a rare sensation of stepping into history without sacrificing ease.
