Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris

Location & practical

On the Île de la Cité, where Paris quite literally began, Notre-Dame rises with a calm authority that feels almost engineered to impress. Construction started in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and stretched over nearly two centuries, which explains its curious balance between early and high Gothic. The façade reads like a manifesto: three portals dense with biblical sculpture, a gallery of kings once mistaken for French monarchs and beheaded during the Revolution, and twin towers that remain stubbornly unfinished by design.

Step inside and the logic of Gothic architecture becomes physical. Ribbed vaults lift the ceiling to 33 meters, while flying buttresses outside quietly do the heavy lifting, allowing those vast rose windows to exist at all. The south rose alone measures over 12 meters across, filtering light into deep blues and reds that shift with the hour.

There is history here that feels oddly tangible. Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself emperor here in 1804, placing the crown on his own head in a gesture of theatrical independence. In 1831, Victor Hugo published Notre-Dame de Paris, effectively saving the cathedral from neglect by making it fashionable again.

Then came the fire of 2019. The spire collapsed, the roof burned, yet the structure endured. Walking around it today, you notice something rare: a monument that carries both eight centuries of history and a very recent scar, now meticulously restored.

Stand on the parvis at sunset, watch the façade turn from pale stone to warm gold, and you understand why this place continues to anchor the city.

Good to know.
