About

On the quiet edge of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, Moonfleet Manor looks across the long silver sheet of the Fleet Lagoon toward Chesil Beach. The house began life in the eighteenth century as a Georgian manor built for a prosperous merchant family, its red brick symmetry still clearly visible despite later Victorian additions that gave the building its gables, bay windows, and slightly romantic silhouette. The setting alone would justify a visit: salt air, wide skies, and a stretch of coastline shaped by centuries of wind and tide. Yet the atmosphere inside is what lingers. Timber beams, deep fireplaces, and creaking staircases remind you that this was once a private country house rather than a purpose built hotel. The name itself comes from Moonfleet, the 1898 adventure novel by J Meade Falkner set in the nearby village and steeped in tales of smugglers along this coast. Staying here, with the lagoon outside and the vast shingle bank beyond, it is easy to see why the story took root here. Today the manor balances history with an easy warmth. Rooms look out over water and fields, the restaurant draws on the rich produce of Dorset, and the pace of life slows to something that feels pleasantly old fashioned. It is the sort of place where landscape, architecture, and a good story quietly reinforce one another.
