About
At the edge of the forested precinct of Meiji Jingu, the Meiji Jingu Museum by Kengo Kuma reveals itself with studied restraint. A long, low roofline in dark copper appears to hover above glass, supported by slender wooden columns that echo traditional shrine carpentry without imitating it. Inside, the sequence is deliberate: dimly lit galleries, generous negative space, and carefully isolated artefacts such as Emperor Meiji’s carriage and personal effects. The atmosphere is almost ceremonial, yet contemporary in its precision. What lingers is the contrast with Tokyo outside, a shift from urban density to quiet contemplation within minutes.
