About

Marbella Club has a curious relationship with its own reputation. This is the hotel that helped put Marbella on the map, yet it rarely behaves like the grande dame of the Costa del Sol. There is no palace entrance, no attempt to overwhelm arriving guests and surprisingly little showing off. For a place founded by a prince, it feels remarkably relaxed. The story begins in 1954, when Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe started welcoming friends to his seaside residence. Those friends included aristocrats, film stars and industrialists, and before long Marbella Club became the address that introduced international society to a then sleepy corner of southern Spain. In many ways, the hotel grew up alongside Marbella itself. What surprises today is how little of that history feels staged. Rather than one monumental building, the property unfolds through subtropical gardens, whitewashed houses and shaded courtyards. Walking through the grounds often feels more like wandering through a private estate than staying at one of Europe’s most famous resorts. La Concha mountain rises in the background, the Mediterranean sits just beyond the gardens and everything moves at a pace that seems increasingly rare on this stretch of coastline. The guest list over the decades has included everyone from Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly to Brigitte Bardot, yet the atmosphere remains decidedly family oriented. Children cycle through the grounds, long lunches stretch into late afternoons and returning guests seem to know exactly where their favourite table is.
