About

Paris has no shortage of literary references turned into hospitality concepts, yet Maison Proust manages to avoid the trap of pastiche. Hidden in the Marais, the hotel occupies a discreet 19th century townhouse, its façade giving little away. Inside, the world shifts. Designer Jacques Garcia leans fully into the Belle Époque, but with discipline. Velvet, lacquered wood, dim amber lighting and a careful layering of textures create a mood that feels intimate rather than theatrical. The reference to Marcel Proust is not decorative. Rooms evoke the private salons and bedrooms where he wrote, with heavy drapes, deep colours and a sense of quiet enclosure. It works because the scale remains controlled. At around two dozen rooms, the hotel feels closer to a private residence than a grand hotel. Downstairs, the bar and spa are perhaps the most convincing spaces. The bar, lined with books and mirrors, encourages lingering rather than spectacle. The spa, inspired by hammam traditions, is deliberately cocooning and slightly disorienting in a way that suits the narrative. Service is attentive and well calibrated. The weakness, if there is one, lies in the fact that the concept dominates. If you are looking for light, views or contemporary clarity, this is not your address. If you enjoy immersion and atmosphere, it becomes compelling.
