Maison Jullian
1 Chem. de Halage du Port Neuf, 34500 Béziers, France
About
The most remarkable room at Maison Jullian is not a bedroom. It is a former billiard room. A stained glass wall catches the afternoon light. A domed ceiling covered in Moorish ornament rises overhead. Patterned tiles run across the floor. Today it serves as the restaurant, though it takes some discipline to focus on the menu when there is so much to look at around you. The room tells you almost everything about the house. Around 1890, wine merchant Martien Jullian built this folly on the banks of the Canal du Midi, during a period when the vineyards around Béziers were generating immense wealth. Ambitious merchants expressed their success through architecture, and Jullian clearly saw little reason to be restrained. What survives today is one of the most characterful addresses in southern France. The current owners have transformed the property into a guesthouse with just three suites, yet the house still feels like a private residence. The bedrooms combine period details with a lighter contemporary touch. One occupies part of a turret that now doubles as a reading room. Another includes a boudoir. Large windows frame views of the canal and the gardens beyond. The garden itself deserves attention. Mature trees shade an English style lawn, an antique greenhouse opens towards a natural swimming pool, and the atmosphere encourages the sort of slow afternoons that rarely survive modern travel itineraries. Food is taken seriously here, which is fortunate because guests have every reason to linger. The restaurant occupies the historic heart of the house and delivers seasonal cooking rooted in the region rather than culinary theatrics. It feels entirely in keeping with the property. Maison Jullian will not suit travellers searching for extensive facilities or the spectacle of a grand luxury hotel. This is a place for those who enjoy houses with stories, architecture with personality and hotels small enough that they still feel personal.
