La Gioia San Marco
Via S. Marco, 38, 20121 Milano MI, Italy
About
La Gioia San Marco plays a clever Milanese game. It gives you classic Italian comfort, then dresses it for a very polished evening out. The restaurant sits at Via San Marco 38, between Brera and Porta Nuova, close to Moscova, which makes it feel well placed for a dinner that begins with city energy and ends with excellent pasta. The house presents itself as a refined classic Italian restaurant, and that is exactly the point: elegance, rhythm and detail, without culinary acrobatics for their own sake. Executive chef Alessio Tafini leads the kitchen, and the menu reads like a survey of Italian pleasures with expensive handwriting. There is vitello tonnato, culatello, lobster linguine, rigatoni with black truffle, a saffron risotto described as a tribute to Marchesi, and a Milanese veal cutlet cooked in butter. In other words, the sort of menu that makes ordering feel like a mild character test. Inside, La Gioia appears designed for people who appreciate a room before the first bite arrives. Arched niches, bottle lined walls, white tablecloths, mirrors and vintage touches give it the mood of a glamorous private house with restaurant level discipline. The overall effect is intimate, softly theatrical and very Milan in the best sense: cultivated, controlled and quietly pleased with itself.
