About

Kylemore Abbey On the edge of a still Connemara lake stands Kylemore Abbey, a romantic nineteenth century castle built in 1868 by Mitchell Henry as a private residence and later transformed into a Benedictine monastery. Its grey stone façade, punctuated by slender turrets and generous windows, appears almost theatrical against the wild backdrop of bog, mountain and shifting Atlantic light. Inside, traces of aristocratic ambition meet the quiet rhythm of monastic life. A short walk leads to the delicate neo Gothic church, erected in memory of Henry’s wife, and to one of Ireland’s most impressive Victorian walled gardens where fruit trees, glasshouses and disciplined flower beds reveal an unexpected horticultural world. The journey itself feels like part of the experience. Visitors arrive curious and leave with the sense of having stepped briefly into another century.
